Most people talk about “finding balance” like it’s some calm, centered, perfectly equal state. But real balance is nothing like that. It is messy, dynamic and constantly shifting. Here is what balance actually looks like in a real life with real responsibilities.
What Balance Actually Looks Like
I saw a post the other day about “finding balance,” and the comments were all about how important it is to “be balanced.” And I just sat there thinking, do people actually know what balance is?
Because balance is not some calm, still, perfectly centered state where all areas of your life are equally tended to and thriving at the exact same time. Oh no, no, no, no no.
Balance is a constant state of adjustment.
Think of literally anything that requires physical balance: tightrope walking, tree pose, standing on a balance beam.
You are never standing perfectly still in the absolute middle. Your body is constantly correcting. Shifts left, right, forward, back. Sometimes tiny shifts, and sometimes huge swings where your arms even have to get involved to straighten you out.
Same for life sweet teats.
It is over indexing in one area of life, then realizing you are out of whack and then reprioritizing and shifting over to the other area of life, putting the wheels back on there, then rushing over to another area of life before that falls down. And in the end of all of this unbalanced time, energy and effort, you achieve balance. Balance via unbalance.
Real Balance Is Built Through Shifting, Not Perfection
Real balance, in real life, is prioritizing what needs your focus right now, getting that area into a good enough place, and then shifting your time and energy toward the next area that needs you.
It is a lifelong process of tilting toward what matters most in this moment, then rebalancing when life changes again.
And honestly, despite that sounding sarcastic, it is fun. It makes life more interesting and exciting or at least less boring. I do not want endless days of sameness where I am perfectly balanced. I want at least a little chaos and obsession and over indexing and recalibration.

When you zoom out to the big picture, the whole season or year or even a 3 to 5 year chunk, that is what balance actually looks like. Not perfect, not equal, not static.
So if you too have been fed the wisdom of how it is all about balance, just know that that shxt is not shxt. You are doing great at life. And if you are not doing great in an area, just make some shifts.
